How we research, write and build
IoT Financial is written for directors and accountants who need to check the reasoning. This page explains how.
This is general information and education only. It is not financial, investment, tax, accounting, legal or regulatory advice, and it is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold bitcoin or any other asset. It does not take account of your circumstances or those of your company. You must obtain your own official professional advice to confirm this information is correct before acting on it.
Rules change. This information is correct to our understanding at the last-reviewed date, but it may be incomplete or out of date, and official sources take precedence. Bitcoin is volatile. A company that buys it could lose some or all of the money it puts in.
Using this site does not create an adviser or client relationship. IoT Financial is not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and is not registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as an investment adviser. Read the full disclaimer.
Sources
- We cite primary sources, paired by market where the rules differ: tax authorities (IRS and HMRC), standard setters (FASB, and the FRC or IFRS Foundation), regulators and protection schemes (SEC and FCA, FDIC and FSCS) and security guidance (NIST and NCSC), plus Bitcoin Improvement Proposals for technical points.
- We do not cite blogs, forums, social media or provider marketing as evidence.
- Every source link is checked when a page is reviewed. If a link stops working, we replace it or remove the claim it supported.
- We do not publish statistics we cannot trace to a primary source.
Jurisdictions
Every guide covers the United States and the United Kingdom at the same depth. Where the rules differ, the two markets appear side by side under matching headings, with paired sources, and which market comes first alternates between guides. Examples use figures that work in USD or GBP, and the tools let you choose either. Where we could not find a matching rule in one market, we say so rather than leave a gap. The site uses one spelling standard for consistency and avoids terms that only make sense in one market.
Tools
- Every calculator shows its formula on the same page, in a form you can reproduce in a spreadsheet.
- Every questionnaire shows its rules, in the order they are applied.
- Tools run in your browser. Inputs are not sent to us or stored.
- Tools use the numbers you enter. They do not fetch prices, forecast values or estimate returns.
- The tool logic is tested with fixed example inputs each time it changes.
What we do not do
- We do not give price views, forecasts or return estimates.
- We do not rank or recommend specific providers, and we take no affiliate fees or referral payments.
- We do not hold, move or manage anyone's funds, and we do not provide investment, custody or brokerage services.
- We do not tell anyone to buy, sell or hold bitcoin.
Review
Each guide shows a "Last reviewed" date. A review means re-checking every source link and every factual claim against the current version of its source. Our guides, tools and documents are not reviewed by an accountant or other professional on your behalf. Whether you are in the US or the UK, get your own professional advice to confirm the information is correct before acting on it.
Corrections
If you find an error, email hello@iotfinancial.net with the page and the source. We correct errors promptly and update the review date.
